Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

This art is now of course internationally famous having been pioneered by the Gracie family. The art has developed tremendously since its creation and even though the fundamentals of the art remain the same, it has the ability to adapt to modern times. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an advanced form of the Japanese Jujitsu. It is predominately a ground fighting art. The fighter’s objective is to avoid punches and kicks whilst attempting to clinch his opponent. Once in the clinch the opponent’s strikes are rendered ineffective. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter will then proceed to take the fight to the ground where his opponent’s strikes will have reduced power behind them. Taken out of his game, the striker who is untrained in ground fighting becomes close to helpless, without the ability to use his stand-up skills.

The defence techniques are all based on leverage, making it possible for the fighter to beat stronger and heavier opponents. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses the opponent’s strength and force against themselves. The key is balance and leverage.
